Why airborne early warning does not replace scouting

Airborne early-warning aircraft provide wide surveillance, but targets inside their useful picture are already within a task group's combat reach.

Question

Have airborne early-warning aircraft taken over the cruiser's role as the eyes of the fleet?

Short answer

They provide airborne warning and monitoring, but not all of the beyond-range scouting and reconnaissance the older phrase implies.

Notes

Broad airborne surveillance differs from reconnaissance beyond the fleet's immediate operating area. An AEW aircraft can monitor a large volume of air and sea, but a contact within that picture is already close enough to fall inside the task group's engagement environment. Tactical scouting therefore still requires assets that can look farther ahead or investigate contacts directly. Shipborne helicopters have inherited part of that closer reconnaissance role.
