AESA beam control and the scale of destroyer fleets

The comparison places Chinese radar iteration and AESA beam control alongside destroyer numbers and the continuing capability of older PESA sets.

Notes

China's radar development is traced through the Type 052C, Type 052D and Type 055 destroyers. Their numbers are compared with the larger Arleigh Burke force to put radar labels in a fleet context. Older American PESA sets are still regarded as capable while AESA systems enter service. AESA offers more control and tuning of the beam, including adjustments intended to reduce the effect of jamming. The technical explanation remains qualified rather than treating a newer radar label as a complete measure of combat capability.
