At roughly 2,713 tons, Adventure was 114 metres long, with an 11.7-metre beam, a 3.8-metre draught and a crew of 289. Twelve Yarrow boilers fed two triple-expansion engines driving two shafts for 16,000 indicated horsepower. Her 25-knot speed and range of about 2,300 nautical miles at 10 knots met the central requirement for a flotilla support ship. Ten 12-pounder guns, eight 3-pounders and two 18-inch torpedo tubes gave her more 12-pounders than the tender had required. The combination aimed to keep the ship close enough to destroyer performance for flotilla work while retaining cruiser-like endurance and command utility.
