Why did Germany not complete the remaining Admiral Hipper-class cruisers after the losses in Norway?
Short answerResources went elsewhere because the Kriegsmarine ranked behind the army and Luftwaffe in German wartime priorities.
NotesThe losses in Norway did not make completion automatic because hulls still competed for scarce money, labour and matériel. That contest took place inside Hermann Göring's rearmament system. The navy was not the German state's priority instrument, especially once the war intensified demands from the army and Luftwaffe. An unfinished cruiser therefore remained less urgent than programmes supported by the services with greater political weight.
