The Admiral de Ruyter class was a major improvement over the Wolf/Fret ships, as expected of a design more than a decade younger and built after the First World War. Four destroyers were fitted for minesweeping and four for minelaying. Every ship could carry a Fokker floatplane. Six 21-inch (533 mm) torpedo tubes were arranged in two triple mounts. These were suitable ships for Dutch requirements, but the total of only eight remained the central limitation.
