An earlier British adoption of triple turrets would make them a likely choice for the Admiral class. Three triple mountings could retain nine guns while eliminating the space taken by a fourth turret. Hood's quoted beam of 31.8 metres, compared with 27.6 metres for the Queen Elizabeth class, provides room for the proposed arrangement. Fewer mountings would also reduce the crew requirement to some extent. The saved hull space could support the combination of speed, protection, and heavy armament expected of the new battlecruiser.
