An Admiral-class hull behind Ark Royal's design

An unfinished Admiral-class battlecruiser hull may have informed plans for a 70-to-80-aircraft carrier, although no surviving document proves the link.

Notes

The proposed link joins plans for a 70-to-80-aircraft carrier, internal descriptions of Cammell Laird as the experienced large-carrier yard, and the availability of the unfinished Admiral-class hull HMS Howe. Converting a paused battlecruiser was plausible because the Royal Navy already had experience turning Eagle, Courageous, and Glorious into carriers. Treaty timing could also have left Howe as an exceptional large hull, much as Hood was treated as an exception, although that remains counterfactual. The surviving plans and discussions fit together, but no document explicitly identifies Howe as Cammell Laird's carrier project. The case shows how strong circumstantial evidence can support an interpretation while the missing documentary link remains visible.
