With modern foreknowledge in 1915, should the Admiral class be improved as battlecruisers or completed as aircraft carriers?
Short answerComplete them as carriers, then build a separate fast-battleship force and preserve the naval air arm needed to exploit them.
NotesThe proposed programme builds five Admiral-class carriers with deck-edge lifts and appropriate aviation facilities. Separate fast battleships would provide 30-knot speed and twelve 16.5-inch guns. Five of each major type are intended to keep roughly two operational at a time. The aircraft programme also depends on retaining naval control of aircraft carried at sea and of flying boats. With enough urgency, a carrier is imagined completing before the end of 1917. Suitable aerial torpedoes with stabilising fins and tension wires could then support a strike on Wilhelmshaven before the war ended. The timetable assumes access to later technical knowledge throughout the programme.
