Modernizing Adelaide and training Perth's crew

Adelaide's late-1930s refit converted her to oil firing, strengthened anti-aircraft armament, and helped prepare sailors for the new cruiser Perth.

Notes

The 60,000-pound refit removed two boilers and a funnel as the ship shifted from mixed coal-and-oil firing to oil alone. Adelaide also exchanged older weapons, including one six-inch gun, for a stronger four-inch anti-aircraft battery. She recommissioned for joint exercises before her trained company departed for Britain to commission Perth, forcing the cruiser to prepare another crew when war came. The sequence shows an old hull serving as a bridge to newer equipment and personnel requirements.
