Achates and the hard service of the early interwar destroyers

Achates brought an older but heavily used destroyer design into the convoy screen.

Notes

Achates belonged to the A-class generation built between 1928 and 1931 and entered commission in 1930. Her stated design combined four single 4.7-inch guns with two quadruple 21-inch torpedo mountings and a nominal speed of 35 knots. John Brown built her, illustrating that the yard's work extended beyond large warships. Acasta and Ardent were sisters lost while defending Glorious against Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. Ten of the twenty A- and B-class ships were lost during the war, a toll connected here to their age and the demanding work assigned to them.
