One Thornycroft proposal combined diesel motors for cruising with steam turbines for high speed. The diesels were not ready in time, so the proposed combination did not enter service as intended. Garland took a different approach through semi-geared turbines. Parsons contracted the hull to Cammell Laird and fitted the ship out itself. Taking responsibility for a complete destroyer allowed the turbine maker to demonstrate the machinery it wanted the Navy to adopt.

Cruising diesels and Garland's semi-geared turbines
Acasta specials explored separate cruising machinery and gave Parsons a complete ship in which to demonstrate its turbines.
