The 30 mm outer armor is intended to initiate or decap an incoming shell or bomb before the 100 mm inner belt protects structural integrity and buoyancy. That layered scheme gives the ship a far more credible survival system than early Condottieri cruisers whose entire protection could be thinner than Abruzzi's outer belt. The wartime removal of the torpedo tubes made room for antisubmarine mortars as operational needs changed. On paper, the Italian 37 mm gun fell short of the 40 mm Pom-Pom and Bofors, but it still posed a meaningful threat to attacking aircraft. The class combined a balanced original design with room for practical wartime adaptation.
