An outer and inner belt, armored decks, strong turrets, and protected bulkheads made the Abruzzi design dramatically more survivable than its predecessors. Ten six-inch guns in twin and triple turrets, six torpedo tubes, and 34 knots produced a balanced combatant, though range remained tailored to the Mediterranean. Four aircraft and antisubmarine mortars broadened its utility beyond surface gunnery. Its long postwar life and radar refit underline how much more adaptable this final design proved.
