Chapter ยท 13:02-16:32

A balanced light cruiser instead of a speed specialist

The Abruzzi design trades extreme speed for ten six-inch guns, useful dual-purpose armament, better protection, and a more credible all-round cruiser.

Notes

At roughly 34 knots, the class gives up the headline speed of earlier Condottieri designs but gains a far better balance of firepower, protection, and fighting utility. Five forward and five after six-inch guns have clear fields of fire, while centerline torpedoes and four twin 100 mm mounts give the cruiser a credible all-round weapon fit. The mast arrangement may not be aesthetically ideal, but the rangefinder position and hull form reflect practical design choices. The published standard and full-load displacement figures seem difficult to reconcile with the claimed 4,125-nautical-mile cruising range. The discrepancy is a warning that figures repeated in reputable secondary works may still descend from the same uncertain source.
