Osmaniye formed part of Sultan Abdülaziz's effort to strengthen the Ottoman Empire through material modernisation and naval spending. By 1875, that programme had helped make the Ottoman fleet the world's third largest after the British and French navies. Abdülaziz received an Ottoman education, studied history, composed classical music, and travelled through Paris, London, and Vienna in 1867. Naval infrastructure demanded sustained spending, while crop failures and economic distress contributed to his deposition in 1876. Osmaniye's history links naval power to political authority and a state's ability to sustain long-term investment.
