The machinery and scarcity of the Abdiel class

High power in a small hull gave the Abdiel class exceptional speed, but six completed ships never meant six available together.

Notes

The Abdiel class combined a roughly 2,700-ton standard displacement and 3,500-ton full load with about 72,000 shaft horsepower. British figures discussed here put the ships near 40 knots at standard displacement and 38 knots fully loaded. An American carrier group reportedly estimated Manxman at about 45 knots during the 1956 Suez crisis, after fifteen years in service. That estimate is distinct from the quoted British ratings. Treaty definitions counted the ships as cruisers because they exceeded the destroyer tonnage limit. The availability calculation cites one loss in 1941, Welshman's loss in February 1943, and another loss in September 1943. Apollo did not commission until October 1943. Those losses and staggered completions explain why six ships built never gave the Royal Navy more than four available together.
