Would the Mitsubishi A7M1 have been a good carrier fighter?
Short answerIt was a promising improved Zero, but it came far too late and in far too few numbers to affect the war.
NotesThe Reppu was a credible late Japanese answer to the Hellcat. Only a handful were completed, so the aircraft never became an operational system at useful scale. Japan also lacked enough experienced carrier pilots to turn a promising design into restored naval air power. Technical maturity arrived after industrial and personnel conditions had made strategic impact impossible.
