What the A4W designation reveals about reactor maturity

The A4W name identifies a fourth-generation Westinghouse carrier reactor and sets its mature design against the supplier change embodied by Ford’s A1B plant.

Notes

In the Navy’s designation, the A marks an aircraft-carrier application, four identifies the fourth core generation, and W denotes Westinghouse. That lineage matters because it reflects repeated experience designing surface-ship reactors rather than submarine plants. The A4W proved reliable and capable, although future electrical demands were expected to exceed what it could conveniently supply. The Ford class therefore moved to the first-generation A1B carrier reactor from a different supplier, creating a revealing contrast between mature machinery and a new power-generation path.
