845 began as a strike, anti-submarine, and reconnaissance squadron. Commando helicopter operations later defined its Junglies identity, while the motto translated here as 'I hear the enemy' remained in use. Sea Kings, Merlins, and earlier helicopters carry Royal Marines from ships to difficult ground ashore for insertion, extraction, and sustainment. The flying is exceptionally low level and depends on pilots, aircrew, maintainers, and the rest of the squadron working as one team. Comparisons at this level are acknowledged as judgment calls, with excellent American units also cited, although 845 is given a slight edge based on personal observation.
