Galaxy and California classes as a redundancy analogy

A fictional ship comparison explains why crew size and mission shape reasonable expectations for redundancy.

Notes

The Galaxy and California classes provide a fictional analogy for a real warship-design problem. Comparing them avoids some of the national loyalties that can dominate debate about actual ships. The Galaxy class has more crew in the comparison, adding capacity for damage control and adaptation when things go wrong. The California class serves a different mission and needs a different balance of personnel, space, and redundant systems. Less redundancy by itself does not make it a poor design. Safety and survivability still matter, with their application suited to the ship's size and role.
