Spanish design continuity and comparisons of frigate cost

The F100-to-F110 design lineage offers a way to think about development costs and national price comparisons.

Notes

About €860 million per F110 is quoted in the cost comparison. Domestic construction costs and exchange rates for imported equipment affect comparisons between nations. A substantially different price should prompt questions about what a programme actually includes. Spanish design continuity is offered as one reason costs can be contained. The Álvaro de Bazán (F100) experience supplies a starting point for F110, allowing some systems and design work to develop from an earlier programme. That reduces the amount of work which must begin afresh.
