Premature looting cost Venice captured ships and French support

Venetian crews violated the rule against looting before a battle ended, allowing Ottoman recaptures and prompting the French contingent to leave for Rhodes.

Notes

Venetian rules prohibited looting captured ships until the battle was over. On 25 August, crews nevertheless began plundering Ottoman vessels they had taken. The Ottomans recovered those ships while the Venetians were occupied with the loot. The French contingent then abandoned the Venetians and sailed to Rhodes, judging that it could provide more useful help there.
