Grimani was arrested after returning home. Ottoman accounts emphasise the passion and quality of his defence. The alternative explanation places more weight on the information Venice obtained about the conduct of its fleet. It showed which ships had held back or failed to assist and how badly infighting had affected the war councils. Those details spread responsibility across a command structure in which the admiral's orders repeatedly failed to produce action.
