Torpedo caution and a usable coalition flagship

British anti-submarine habits and Phillips's staff capacity are presented as reasons a Force Z-led coalition might fight differently from the historical Java Sea command.

Notes

British commanders would assume a submarine threat and keep zigzagging even without a firm estimate of Japanese torpedo range. That standing habit could also complicate Japanese surface torpedo attacks. Prince of Wales and Repulse would bring 14- and 15-inch guns whose range lets the force engage Japanese cruisers beyond torpedo reach. Phillips would also bring a proper staff and a flagship with space for coalition command. The historical Dutch commander inherited a multinational task force without the equipment or preparation to manage it effectively.
