Could Germany use a Zeppelin as a flying aircraft carrier to scout the Atlantic?
Short answerIt might scout briefly, but radio direction finding and fighter attack would make the slow, low-capacity airship too vulnerable.
NotesA Zeppelin could launch and recover reconnaissance aircraft if a reliable mechanism were available. Its air group would remain much smaller than a shipborne carrier's. Frequent radio exchanges with Germany would reveal its position through direction finding, and its low speed would make escape difficult. Britain could send Ark Royal or another carrier to intercept it with fighters. Long-range patrol aircraft are consequently judged a safer way to provide the reconnaissance.
