York's wartime loss and the disposal of her wreck occurred years apart. She was lost on 22 May 1941 but was not finally scrapped until 3 March 1952. Her remains therefore sat at Suda Bay for roughly a decade after she ceased to be a fighting ship. The chronology distinguishes the ship's operational loss from the much later removal of her remains.
