York displaced about 8,250 tons standard and Exeter about 8,390, with both exceeding 10,000 tons at full load. Each measured roughly 175 metres overall, although Exeter's 17.68-metre beam was slightly wider than York's 17.37 metres. Their complements were 623 and 630 respectively, and their power, speed, and draught were broadly similar. Each carried six 8-inch guns, four single 4-inch guns, eight Vickers machine guns in two quadruple mounts, and six 21-inch torpedo tubes in two triple banks. The missing fourth 8-inch-gun turret was the clearest economy compared with an eight-gun County cruiser.
