Asahi's decisive bridge hit in the Yellow Sea

Asahi suffered a twelve-inch hit and disabled aft guns, yet her fire killed Admiral Vitgeft and disrupted the Russian squadron's escape.

Notes

Positioned behind flagship Mikasa, Asahi drew Russian attention but received only one enemy twelve-inch hit. Premature shell detonations disabled her aft main turret, a reminder that well-trained crews and mature mechanisms could still suffer technical failures. Her remaining guns damaged the Russian battleships Poltava and Sevastopol, although Japanese shell penetration proved disappointing. Two of Asahi's twelve-inch shells struck Tsesarevich's bridge, killing Vice Admiral Wilhelm Vitgeft, senior staff, and the quartermaster. Wreckage jammed the flagship's steering and the resulting command confusion helped drive the Russian ships back to Port Arthur. Asahi later struck a mine while blockading the port but survived severe damage and returned from repairs in time for Tsushima.
