Extreme distance and weak communications shaped imperial maritime presence at Tristan da Cunha. The islands lie thousands of miles from Cape Town, St Helena, and the Falkland Islands and remain exceptionally difficult to reach. Yarmouth was the first ship to call there in ten years and brought the islanders news of the First World War's outcome. A cruiser call could carry news and reconnect a community that routine shore communications could not easily reach.
