A Yamato-class Type 3 shell made a brief wall of fire

The Type 3 Sanshiki anti-aircraft shell could make a spectacular burst from a Yamato-class 18-inch gun, but its short-lived fire effect offered little persistent protection.

Notes

The Type 3 Sanshiki anti-aircraft shell offered a useful contrast with the Type 4 rocket. Airmen regarded its dispersed incendiary burst as more of a pyrotechnic display than an effective barrier. Fired from a Yamato-class battleship's 18-inch gun, it could still create an imposing flash and field of fire. The effect faded quickly, so spectacle did not solve the timing and persistence problems facing barrage weapons. An intimidating defensive display was a poor substitute for reliable air defence.
