Reconnaissance before the Battle of the Yalu River

The Japanese Flying Squadron used cruiser reconnaissance to reveal the Beiyang Fleet's readiness before the fleets met at the Yalu River.

Notes

Tōgō's Naniwa served in the four-cruiser Flying Squadron, whose speed was relative to the standards of the 1890s. Naniwa and Yoshino reconnoitered the Chinese base at Weihaiwei, provoking the Beiyang Fleet into a fruitless sortie and gathering clues about its condition. Admiral Ding then used the Beiyang Fleet to escort troop transports toward the Yalu, correctly extracting an operational need from poor and sometimes false reports. That successful escort preceded the fleets' approach to battle, showing that Ding's eventual defeat did not make every preceding decision incompetent.
