The UCLASS concept promised to restore carrier strike range while combining reconnaissance, attack, and refueling in one uncrewed platform. Successful X-47B carrier trials aboard USS George H. W. Bush suggested that a major leap was technically plausible, but cost, institutional caution, and industrial politics pushed the Navy toward a narrower solution. The demonstrator was flying from a carrier in 2013 after a development path begun around 2000. The original concept might already have entered service if the United States had accepted the risk and expense of a generational change.
