Missing ship photographs and the Tower Hill Merchant Navy memorial

The uneven visual record for merchant ships and the memorial panels at Tower Hill show why commemoration and surviving sources both matter to this history.

Notes

The surviving visual record is uneven even for a global war fought in the age of photography, and some merchant ships have no readily available picture. SS British Chivalry is one example. The discussion then turns to the Merchant Navy memorial at Tower Hill in London, whose panels preserve the names of lost merchant seamen, including people from SS Athenia discussed earlier in the video. The memorial lies outside many visitors' usual London itinerary despite its value as a place of wartime commemoration. Together, the missing photographs and surviving name panels show why merchant-service history has to be reconstructed from several different kinds of evidence.
