William Sims and wartime destroyer design learning

William Sims's reports illustrate how American designers could combine their own destroyer experience with lessons from Royal Navy operations.

Notes

Reports from British destroyer operations supplemented the American Navy's own experience. William Sims observed Royal Navy operations, commanded American units and sent information back across the Atlantic. Clemson and Wickes development drew on those combined sources of operational knowledge. British destroyers, meanwhile, were being built and revised throughout the war. Access to experience shaped both approaches, although Britain incorporated its lessons through successive wartime designs.
