Parker-class improvements to the destroyer leader

Three funnels, superfiring forward guns and more signalling space explain how the Parker class improved on earlier leaders.

Notes

Parker displaced about 1,700 tons fully loaded, with quoted performance of 34 knots and 4,920 nautical miles at 15 knots. Weapons included four 4-inch guns, two 40 mm 2-pounders and four 21-inch torpedo tubes in twin mountings, together with depth-charge throwers. Revised boiler and funnel arrangements reduced the funnel count from four to three. The broader forward funnel helped disperse smoke and made room for a superfiring gun position ahead. That layout aided aiming and allowed the two forward guns to support one another. Fire control and additional signalling and communications space improved the ship's ability to lead other destroyers.
