Faulknor-class Chilean orders and destroyer-leader lessons

Chilean-origin Faulknors brought larger destroyer leaders into British service and exposed limits in the M-class approach.

Notes

The Chilean-origin Almirante Lynch or Faulknor ships were destroyer leaders built by J. S. White. They were larger than the ordinary destroyers considered earlier, at about 1,450 tons standard and approximately 1,800 to 1,900 tons full load. The armament figures include six 4-inch guns, with variations in individual gun and torpedo arrangements. Tipperary's loss at Jutland supplies another example of a requisitioned ship fighting in the British fleet. Further approximate specifications are 31 knots, 4,205 nautical miles at 15 knots, six boilers and three shafts. Experience with these larger leaders exposed limitations in the M-class approach and prompted consideration of further destroyer requirements.
