Would small drone swarms threaten a warship?

Defence against drones arriving from several directions depends on gun coverage, electronic warfare and the damage an interception prevents.

Question

Would multiple small drones attacking from different directions, with electronic warfare support, threaten a warship?

Short answer

The threat is judged manageable for a suitably armed warship. Interception cost also needs to be compared with the damage prevented, which can justify an expensive missile against a cheap drone.

Notes

Large numbers of small drones are most plausible close to land, with the Red Sea and Suez Canal as examples. A suitably armed warship faces a more manageable threat than one relying mainly on large missiles. The cost comparison needs to include damage a successful attack would cause, so an expensive interceptor can still be justified against a cheap drone. Powerful electronic-warfare equipment and radar are proposed as ways to disrupt smaller drones. Type 31's 57 mm gun and two 40 mm guns illustrate separate mounts covering different sectors. CAMM remains available alongside the gun coverage.
