Why submarines cannot replace surface fleets

Submarine sea denial cannot supply all the escort and air-defense capabilities needed to keep maritime routes usable.

Question

What is the worst depiction of naval warfare in media?

Short answer

A particularly damaging misconception is that submarines alone can provide sea control when they are principally sea-denial assets.

Notes

A recurring bad description of naval power treats one successful platform as making the rest of the fleet obsolete. Submarines are exceptionally effective at sea denial and strike missions, but they cannot by themselves escort merchant traffic, support amphibious movement, or defend a route against air attack. Long-range anti-ship missiles also create surveillance areas far larger than one submarine can sweep for distant surface launchers. Sea control therefore requires layered surface, air, sensor, and logistics capabilities that can protect friendly use of the water. Sinking enemy ships and keeping an ocean route usable are different operational problems.
