Why the World Wars crowd ironclads out of general histories

Market demand and word limits can push the quieter ironclad transition out of general naval histories.

Notes

A general naval history has to contend with word limits and readers' preference for wars. The Second World War occupies considerable space because it is easier to sell to a mass audience. That pressure can displace material on technically important but less battle-dense periods such as the age of iron. Editorial visibility is therefore a poor measure of historical significance when judging what a survey book leaves out.
