Which World War II warship most failed to live up to its hype?
Short answerJudged by wartime rather than postwar hype, Tirpitz or possibly Hood is a stronger answer than Yamato.
NotesYamato is an easy modern answer because she never performed the battle-line role imagined for her, but much of her hype developed after the war. A ship can only fail contemporary expectations if those expectations actually surrounded it while in service. That moves the discussion toward heavily publicized German battleships, especially Tirpitz, or possibly Hood. Bismarck at least sank Hood, while Tirpitz's strategic effect came chiefly from the threat that kept Allied forces available. Operational achievement, deterrent value, and later popular reputation produce different answers.
