Free French action exposed wartime ambiguities

The Free French seizure of Saint Pierre and Miquelon in 1941 prompted an American Monroe Doctrine objection even though the islands remained French.

Notes

Secretary of State Cordell Hull treated the Free French takeover of Saint Pierre and Miquelon from Vichy control in December 1941 as a violation of the Monroe Doctrine. The islands lay off Canada and were already French territory. The dispute therefore concerned a change between competing French authorities rather than a new European colony. A possible consequence raised here is disruption to early Allied cooperation, including potential Free French involvement with ABDA Command. That consequence remains a qualified interpretation.
