How did smoke-generating equipment differ among the major navies in World War I?
Short answerIt differed little: navies used broadly similar smoke pots and fuel-fed funnel smoke.
NotesThe panel sees no major national technology gap in World War I smoke equipment. Ships could carry dedicated smoke pots for an additional source of obscurant. They could also alter combustion by adding fuel so the funnels produced a much denser cloud. The tactical differences therefore came more from employment and handling than from one navy possessing an exclusive smoke-making system.
