World War I's maritime lesson shaped global fleet roles

Britain's wartime movement of imperial resources and trade supported a postwar fleet plan in which N3s guarded nearer theatres and fast G3s served distant stations.

Notes

Britain's mass army dominates much later memory of World War I, although political leaders also understood the conflict as a global maritime war. Moving imperial resources and trade depended on naval strength and strategic mobility. Postwar commitments were more geographically diffuse than the confrontation with Germany had been. A hypothetical deployment places the heavily protected N3s with the Home or Mediterranean fleets and the faster G3s in the Indian Ocean or Far East. This connects capital-ship characteristics to the worldwide system the Royal Navy expected the fleet to sustain.
