The excerpt makes the battlefield's physical conditions part of the military history. Coral limited digging, caves concealed defenders, and Japanese fire could appear suddenly after long periods of silence. Heat accelerated decay while the rocky ground prevented burial and basic field sanitation, turning smell and disease into constant burdens. Sledge's memoir explains operational difficulty through the lived conditions of combat and the repeated attrition of exhausted Marine companies.
