Chapter · 3:06:58-3:09:24

Witch Head abandons the fleet's standoff doctrine

The High Guard builds a reconnaissance-led standoff force, then fights the decisive battle as a close-range melee for which most of its ships were not designed.

Notes

The intended system sends surveillance ships forward, brings deep standoff attack ships to the edge of range, launches missile barrages, and shifts firing positions through slipstream. Group-defense frigates and the heavy cruiser protect that strike system rather than form a conventional battle line. At Witch Head, the fleet closes inside a nebula and sacrifices the advantages built into its organization. The mismatch shows why force design and operational doctrine must remain aligned under wartime pressure.
