Wire winding and monobloc casting answered the limits of steel

Wire-wound and monobloc barrels offered different ways to obtain strength as steel purity, alloy control, and casting improved.

Notes

Wire-wound construction wrapped wire around an inner tube beneath an outer barrel in the hope of retaining strength while eliminating some heavy hoops. It could be a genuine improvement for a period, but better built-up barrels and advancing metallurgy reduced its advantage. Monobloc construction demanded much better casting, alloy control, and steel purity because designers aimed to produce a sound barrel as one principal piece. These methods track industry's growing ability to choose alloy properties and control manufacture. Each gun-construction method depended on the steelmaking capabilities of its time.
