Looted wine and local resistance dissolve Tate's force

Wine from a recent shipwreck accelerated indiscipline while Welsh civilians captured or killed isolated French soldiers.

Notes

Many irregulars found wine from a wrecked Portuguese vessel, probably port, and became too drunk to remain effective. Later captors mostly found the missing men asleep or incapacitated. Looting and damage to churches provoked local men and women to kill or capture isolated invaders instead of joining the expected uprising. Castagnier's ships had already departed on orders to support forces believed to remain near Ireland, removing Tate's route of escape. His officers began recommending surrender.
