Was there much impetus to improve age-of-sail ships' windward performance through rig design?
Short answerThere was some, but additional crew, maintenance and provisions limited how far rigging could become more complicated.
NotesThere was some impetus to improve sailing ships' windward performance through rig design. More complicated rigging, however, required additional crew and maintenance. Feeding those extra sailors added another operational demand. A workable design had to meet its requirements within those limits. The idea that earlier naval architects could build their ideal ships without compromise is rejected.
