Windfall Battleships and the limits of a single source

Aidan Dodson's Windfall Battleships is recommended as an accessible introduction to international battleship orders, despite room for historians to weigh sources differently.

Notes

A disputed interpretation may reflect a historian emphasizing one contemporary account over another rather than a simple mistake. A constructor's report can be technically correct while a captain's operational criticism is also valid, especially when a wartime crew has less specialist experience. The volume supplies plans, photographs, background, archival references, and a substantial bibliography that includes the Dreadnought Project. Its treatment of Chile and Almirante Latorre shows how economics, rival fleets, foreign bids, gun calibre, armour assumptions, and later design changes shaped an international battleship order. The book is an accessible introduction rather than the final word on every contested source judgment.
