Why Winchelsea belongs in naval history

The opening places the 1350 Battle of Winchelsea inside the Hundred Years' War and introduces Edward III's decisive leadership role.

Notes

The Hundred Years' War is often remembered through land battles such as Crecy, but it also produced major contests at sea. Winchelsea, also called Les Espagnols sur Mer, was an English-Castilian battle fought 238 years before the Spanish Armada. That distance from 1588 challenges the idea that English naval identity began in the Elizabethan period. Edward III emerges as an effective warrior-king whose leadership and information advantage shaped the encounter. Winchelsea belongs within medieval naval history rather than serving as a maritime footnote to a land war.
